Whangarei Model Engineering Club

About WMEC
The Whangarei Model Engineering Club Incorporated was formed in 1979 and owned and operated the Tarewa Park Miniature Railway.
In 1997 the Club decided to relocate to Heritage Park in Maunu, where it built its new 5" and 7¼" railway.
The track from Tarewa Park was relaid around the "Mountain" and public running on this section of track was started late 1999.
The club then extended the track by 700 metres out west, where a 25 metre tunnel, a 23 metre viaduct and a small bridge can be encountered.
In 2004 the club built a 2 storey clubhouse with a platform servicing the 3 incoming tracks where passengers are loaded and unloaded.
Every year at the end of January, during Auckland Anniversary Weekend the club holds its Open Weekend, where affiliated clubs members bring their loco's of all shapes and sizes, sometimes from as far afield as the South Island, to make a colourful, steam-filled and memorable occasion for both clubs members and passengers alike.
